Grandmaster
Stephen M.D. Chang
KUNG-FU & TAI-CHI Phone: (604) 876-4038
Grandmaster Stephen Chang started his training in Shaolin 10
Animals Style at the age of 5, and later ventured to Hong Kong
in 1954. There, he furthered his development of the Shaolin style,
as well as occasionally trained (and played) until the early 60's alongside his neighborhood
friend who later became a martial arts legend, Bruce Lee, .
Later, the two each went their separate ways: Bruce set up in Seattle
to teach his "Jeet Kune Do" style of martial
arts, while Stephen ventured just north to Vancouver, Canada, to
teach the "Shaolin Hunggar " style of martial
arts. Chang was sent to North America on a mission by his own grandmaster
(who has since then passed away) to teach kung fu to non-Chinese
people, as Chang could already speak English.
Grandmaster Stephen Chang was a founder of the Shaolin Hunggar
style in Canada in 1969, and first started teaching the Canadian
Armed Forces in Chilliwack what was then called "Chinese Boxing"
or "Shadow Boxing" (see the history
page). From the early 1970s to late 1980s Chang opened
and ran 8 kung fu schools, and has taught over 10,000 students.
He is a true 6th generation heir to the style. Now a Grandmaster
(the highest ranking in traditional Chinese martial arts), he teaches
private lessons in the way of the traditional Hunggar Style to select
disciples, the 7th generation heirs to this style of martial arts,
in his home studio. For years, Chang has been seeking a successor
to become the next grandmaster.
Grandmaster Chang personally and selectively admits new students
as the 7th generation for private and personal studies in his own
ground floor studio. Students can join existing meeting times or
arrange for private attention. Students can also sign up for a few
months, a year, or even as lifetime disciples, learning kung fu
for defense, physical exercise, mental strength, focus and concentration,
reduction of stress, as well as to feel younger and live longer.
Included in the classes is not only form and technique, but also
history, philosophy, culture, and values of an ancient culture.
He also teaches Qi-gong and traditional Chinese medicine,
especially to the higher level students.
In addition to his extensive knowledge in martial
arts, Stephen has also captured the attention of the movie industry,
appearing in many famous Hollywood movies, TV series, and commercials. In
1978, he starred in a national Coca Cola commercial as Bruce Lee,
and was later cast next to Sylvester Stallone as the Vietnamese
Commander who captures Rambo in the 1981 movie, Rambo - First
Blood. Stephen also has 3 comic roles to his credit - showing
us he has a funny side, too - as well as premier roles in international
movies, including Slow Burn (UK), Left Side of the Fridge (French),
and Le Turbulence Des Fluides (French). Besides his
many movie roles, he has also made several guest star appearances
in major television series, such as The X-Files, Kung Fu, The
Twilight Zone, M.A.N.T.I.S., and Danny Devito's 2001 series
Undercover.
His two most significant starring roles came when
he was cast as a WW II military leader in the Mandarin 1990 top
hit International Rescue and in 1994's Double Happiness
-- a movie that film critics Siskel & Ebert gave
"Two Thumbs Up!" and that went on to win 7 international
awards and 2 Genie awards. The film also landed Stephen on Variety
Magazine's "Best Leading Actors" list.
