Current and Active Senior Disciples:
Grandmaster Chang has taught thousands of students
across North America and Europe over the decades, hailing from all
walks of life, including:
- actors and stunt men wanting to gain confidence for their career;
- teachers, students, and office workers who want to improve their
physical fitness;
- people who take health and wellness very seriously;
- yoga practitioners and instructors;
- orientalists who are interested in Asian culture;
- new students who drive across the continent just for a week
of classes;
- those with medical ailments that can be at least partially treated
by Chinese martial arts and traditional Chinese medicine and herbology;
- business executives with lots of stress and little time;
- university students who need confidence and stamina;
- people approaching or passing middle age and becoming more aware
of their mortality and lack of fitness...
We cannot list all the students here, of course, so on this page
we are just listing some of the more active current disciples (long-term
and serious students). As such, the list is prone to change over
time, naturally.
Note: Sifu means master, and Si-hing
means elder in Cantonese.

Master
Jo Furrer
Jo, the longest continuing student, has been studying
under Grandmaster Chang since 1982, and has achieved the Master
level in 2000. Even though he has attained a very high level, he
chooses not to teach, but prefers to continue to study for his own
personal interest, for his own enjoyment, strength, and health.
Jo already had his 2nd dan black belt in Taekwondo
in 1981. This was quite rare to have such a high level in those
years, and Jo was one of the very few in Canada. Having learned
as much as his Taekwondo teacher, he spent several months looking
for a higher-level teacher, and then found Grandmaster Chang.
Since then, he has even passed up work and personal opportunities
elsewhere so he could stay in Vancouver to continue studying with
Chang. He is as humble as he is powerful.

Elder Michael Reume
I was born with schizophrenia. Doctors said that I could never
remember or perform more than 5 moves. I was a Bruce Lee fan, and
when I was 9, my father took me to all the martial art schools,
but no one accepted me. I finally found MASTER STEPHEN CHANG who
said "I will teach you - to prove doctors and instructors are
wrong." After 3 months at my regular check ups, I showed my
doctor 25 moves and surprised him so much, and he told all the others.
I have continued to learn from my sifu (master ) for over 38 years
- I have completed 5 levels - Tiger Form / Snake Form / 2 Men Fighting
Form ( with my mother and other seniors ), Wing Chun / Long Staff,
and now up to Double Short Sticks...all together OVER 300 MOVES
( I will be happy to show you). Now at the age of 50, with the presence
of my Master, I can do demos in front of crowds. I once said to
my doctor, "If I win a lottery, I will give you half."
But before he died he said, "Mike, you should give that half
to your master." Sifu has been more than a father to me for
the last 38 years, and if any one needs him - he's there.

Senior
Si-hing Colin Beaton
Colin has been with Master Chang steadily since
1994. He is the son of an old friend of grandmaster chang: Dr.
Beaton, who runs a chiropractic clinic on Commercial Drive. Colin
has learned the central forms of Hung Gar style: Gung Gi Fok Fu
(Taming the Tiger), Fu Hok Sheung Ying (Tiger and Crane), Ten
Form (Sup Ying), and Iron Thread (Tit Sin). For your information,
one can be called a disciple of Hung Gar only after leaning all
of the above forms (called the Four Pillars).

Master
Henry Lei
Henry studied Wu Shu for 13 years and Shaolin
Hung Gar from Sifu Ken Lowe- who also learned Hung Gar from Graqndmaster
Chang at age 16. Henry became a Master and taught classes for
10 years. He has competed and performed demos in martial arts
and lion dances in many tournaments, as well as in various major
west coast tournaments including Washington and Oregon. Now he
is a full time disciple of Grandmaster Chang to accomplish the
Traditional and Inner System of Hung Gar and its philosophy /
theory, as well as Qi Gong. Henry has also recently begun helping
with the maintenance of this website.

Si-hing
Gary Towne

An ESL and computer teacher in downtown Vancouver
and in northern China, Gary, who speaks and writes some Mandarin
Chinese, plus Indonesian and some French, became a disciple of
Grandmaster Chang in 2003, and, since late 2004, has been occasionally
teaching junior level kung fu classes for English students at
the ESL schools where he has worked with the approval of Grandmaster
Chang and under the guidance of his senior, Master Joel Tibbits.
Similarly, with Grandmaster Chang's approval, starting in 2006,
he has been teaching elementary taijichuan, both in China (to
other Canadian English teachers) and in Vancouver. Like several
other disciples, he has been involved with several of the school's
demonstrations, such as Chinatown's night market. Also, with the
help of other disciples, he has taken over responsibility for
updating and maintaining this website.

Si
Jie Hedy Watrous
This restaurateur in the USA is also black belt karate instructor
in the USA found Grandmaster Chang online and then came to Vancouver
to study directly with him. She left her restaurant for 2 weeks
in order to study May Far Kuen (Plum Flower Fist) and various
animal forms. Grandmaster taught her in different places: at school,
in front of all students, in back yards, in parks, shops, and
beaches. Before she returned, she took several tests in front
of all the senior disciples and passed on the 3rd Test. When she
returned, she proudly showed her teacher and her students. She
has now attained her second dan level in karate.
