Senior Disciples:

Master Joe Furrer
Joe has been studying under Grandmaster Chang since 1982, and has achieved the Master level in 2000. Even though he has attained a very high level, he chooses not to teach, but prefers to continue to study for his own personal interest, for his own enjoyment, strength, and health.

Joe already had his 2nd dan black belt in Taekwondo in 1981. This was quite rare to have such a high level in those years, and Joe was one of the very few in Canada. Having learned as much as his Taekwondo teacher, he spent several months looking for a higher-level teacher, and then found Grandmaster Chang.

Since then, he has even passed up work and personal opportunities elsewhere so he could stay in Vancouver to continue studying with Chang. He is as humble as he is powerful.

Master Joel Tibbits

Joel started studying kung fu with Grandmaster Chang in 1994. He attained the Master level in 2002, and has recently been studying Qigong and traditional Chinese medicine with Grandmaster Chang, and, under Chang’s guidance, has begun teaching kung fu classes for ESL students in downtown Vancouver since early 2004.

Besides kung fu, his vocational work has been in the arts, as a music composer and electric guitarist, stuntman and stunt coordinator (he has achieved a high fall of 4 stories), movie script writer, and movie director (see his entry in the Internet Movie Database http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0862562/ ). He also taught ESL in Japan for 1 year and continues to do so at an ESL school in downtown Vancouver. His long term goal is to learn as much as he can from Grandmaster Chang. He has already begun leading kung fu demonstrations, including at Chinatown's night market, and in 2003 began teaching kung fu classes in downtown Vancouver for ESL students.

Si-hing Jason Harder

A stage performer and actor since 1994, Jason was inspired by and introduced to Grandmaster Stephen Chang and Masters Kung Fu by his old friend, Master Joel, in the late 1990's and became a disciple of Grandmaster Chang. He has acheived thirteen levels (Instructor level with over 5,000 moves). He has also performed kung fu and lion dance in many functions and received several awards. He has found that learning kung fu has given him a great boost of confidence that has helped him in his acting performance.

Si-hing Gary Towne

An ESL and computer teacher in downtown Vancouver and in northern China, Gary, who speaks and writes some Mandarin Chinese, became a disciple of Grandmaster Chang in 2003, and, since late 2004, has been teaching junior level kung fu classes for international students at his own school with the approval of Grandmaster Chang and under the guidance of his senior, Master Joel Tibbits. Similarly, with Grandmaster Chang's approval, starting in 2006, he has been teaching elementary taichi both in China (to other Canadian English teachers) and in Vancouver. Like several other disciples, he has been involved with several of the school's demonstrations, such as Chinatown's night market. Also, with the help of other disciples, he has been responsible for the updating and maintaining of this website.
