Grandmaster Stephen Chang's Bio

Grandmaster Stephen Chang started his training in Shaolin 10 Animals Style at the age of 5 in his native province of Shandong, China, and later ventured to Hong Kong in 1954. There, he furthered his development of the Shaolin style, as well as occasionally trained (and played) until the early 60's alongside his neighborhood friend who later became a martial arts legend, Bruce Lee.

Later, the two each went their separate ways: Bruce set up in Seattle to teach his "Jeet Kune Do" style of martial arts, while Stephen ventured just north to Vancouver, Canada, to teach the "Shaolin Hunggar " style of martial arts. While Lee began teaching kung fu to non-Chinese in the USA, Chang was sent to Canada on a mission by his own grandmaster (who has since then passed away) to teach kungfu to non-Chinese people, as Chang could also already speak English.

Grandmaster Stephen Chang was a founder of the Shaolin Hunggar style in Canada in 1969, and first started teaching the Canadian Armed Forces in Chilliwack what was then called "Chinese Boxing" or "Shadow Boxing" (see the history page). From the early 1970s to late 1980s Chang opened and ran 8 kung fu schools, and has taught over 10,000 students. He is a true 6th generation heir to the style. Now a Grandmaster (the highest ranking in traditional Chinese martial arts), he teaches private lessons in the way of the traditional Hunggar Style to select disciples, the 7th generation heirs to this style of martial arts.. For years, Chang has been seeking a successor to become the next grandmaster.

Grandmaster Chang personally and selectively admits new students as the 7th generation for private and personal studies in his own ground floor studio. Students can join existing meeting times or arrange for private attention. Students can also sign up for a few months, a year, or even as lifetime disciples, learning kungfu for defense, physical exercise, mental strength, focus and concentration, reduction of stress, as well as to feel younger and live longer. Included in the classes is not only form and technique, but also history, philosophy, culture, and values of an ancient culture. He also teaches Tai Chi Chuan, Qi-gong and traditional Chinese medicine, especially to the higher level students.

Stephen Chang has a look, physique, and skill of martial arts comparable to Bruce Lee. Anyone who wishes to learn Tiger, Snake, Crane, Dragon, Leopard, Eagle, Monkey, Mantis, Butterfly Palms, 18 Shaolin Weapons, Qi-gong, meditation, as well as Chinese philosophy is invited to contact him. Stephen also gives seminars, training, and demonstrations to corporations, schools, and universities (will travel).

For the past several years, Grandmaster Chang's kung fu school has been making appearances at various ESL (English Second Language Schools for international students) and at Vancouver's Chinatown summertime night market. If you would like to arrange for Stephen Chang's kung fu school to make a special guest appearance for demos, E-mail him.
